What does Triiibe have to do with maternity photos?

I've learned that when many artists collaborate the results can amazing, but the process can be quite chaotic! Have you ever heard the expression about too many cooks in the kitchen? Well too many photographers working on one image can be similar. Luckily three ladies, myself, Brooke Holland, and Sarah Szwajkos were able to take some beautiful photos. (see left & below) However, with three strong willed photographers we had a lot of opinions about the photographs should look and we started to go in a lot of directions making it a bit hard to reign in.

So...what does Triiibe have to do with maternity photos? Nothing really, just that our situation with three artists working together reminded me a bit of Triiibe. I've know about them for a while, and love their photographs, but I always wondered what it would like to collaborate with other artists on a single photograph. The process of taking Brooke's maternity photos with her and Sarah gave me a small taste of what this might be like.

About Triiibe, from their website: "In 2006 performance artists Alicia, Kelly and Sara Casilio (identical triplets) and photographer Cary Wolinsky formed the collective triiibe to create political and social commentary art."

Did I mention that Brooke & Colin had twins girls? (Yes, the babies are now here, I'm behind in my posts!) Perhaps one day her girls will follow in the footsteps of their mother, Brooke, and wannabe aunties Sarah & Katie --- oh I hope they are little artists!

Sigh, I'm a catholic who believes in marriage equality. Talk about being conflicted! The Catholic faith is such a big part of my family heritage, and therefore very important to me. So many of my childhood memories of my grandparents are wrapped up in religion. There are many Catholic values that I agree with and believe in. However, when my liberal views conflict with the Catholic faith I'm not sure how to define myself. Can one be a liberal Catholic? Appreciate the Catholic faith and yet wholeheartedly disagree with some Catholic views, rules & decisions? Well, I know that it 'can' happen; that's me. I supposed for now I'll continue to define myself as a conflicted Catholic. Someone who despite her church's views believes that straight or gay everyone deserves to publicly declare their love and commitment to one another...and to have that declaration legitimized by their government.

Online shopping 'clubs' & emails

Until I added in a long commute to my life I wasn't an online shopper. Now, the last thing I want to do is stop by the mall for clothes or gifts. Luckily, or dangerously, I have discovered some online shopping sites. Most of them are like online fancy versions of TJ Maxx -- heavily discounted designer brands.

My newest discovery? ShoeDazzle. Everything on ShoeDazzle is $40 and you save an extra 20% off your first purchase. Shoes, bags & jewelry sets. The catch for this one is you have to log in once a month and shop or "skip" the month or you'll be charged $40/month and rack up a stack of credits. Luckily you get email reminders and clicking 'skip' is easy. If you skip the month you're not charged a thing. But, with deals like this how bad could having credits be? Even these awesome knee-high boots are just $40. Should I buy them? I just might... This site, unlike many others, is knock offs not the designer brands.

What other shopping deals go I get delivered to my inbox?

Rue la la
This is my all time favorite deal site because it's a mix of designer and more affordable brands. I've purchased from them many times for myself & gifts. Best deal I scored? A pair of Rock & Republic Jeans. New deals start every day at 11am with 'city' deals emailed around 8am. City deals are mostly restaurants & salons but worth checking out too.

Guilt Group
Here I have a best deal tie. $14 for a pair of movie tickets. OR jewelry for my sister's birthday gift. Guilt deals are mailed at noon, and like Rue la la Guilt also has a city deals page. If you're looking for the most high fashion brands, than this is the deal site for you.

Haute Look
I got the BEST green platter for my mom. She loved it. Score! This site tends to be less designer brands and more middle-of-the-road brands. The good news is that this means most clothing deals are super cheap.

Swirl by Daily Candy
From the same people who send you a daily email of what's trendy, now they too offer a shopping deal site. I got an american apparel dress, the kind you can tie a bunch of different ways, for $20. See the shirt dress on the left? That's a deal today for only $29. As Anthony says when I tell him about a good deal...you'd be losing money if you didn't buy it! This site has the quickest shipping of them all. Once you score a great deal there is nothing better than getting it FAST.

Afraid that it won't fit? Unless it says otherwise these sites offer returns/exchanges. They even provide the return shipping label. Also, most times if you take a website credit the return shipping is free. Or you pay return shipping and receive your money back. Seriously, this is way easier than braving a crowded mall.

I also LOVE the restaurant deal sites...but that's a post for another day! You might be wondering, why the fashion post again? I thought you were a wedding blogger & foodie. Well, I noticed that my post 'How to tie a scarf" was one of my reader favorites. Hmmm...who knew? So, if you like that, I hope you like this too! Happy shopping.

• I got to know, and love, yoga
• Read (or listened to on CD) at least 2 books a month
• Was a bridesmaid...twice
• Took a LOT of pictures and balanced work & art projects
• Supported by husband through his first year of graduate school (Emotionally - we both have to work)
• Ran a half marathon & gained weight doing it! Yes, I got HEAVIER not skinnier, and through it learned to accept the parts of my body that I cannot change!
• Traveled to California with my husband
• Planned time with friends and cooked them dinners
• Wrote 45 blog posts here and even more for foodie blogs for work (see them here)
• Started buying more organic and local foods
• Used more cloth napkins & less paper napkins, plates & plastic forks. Recycled. Even at work.
• Flossed, almost every day
• Learned more about wine and how to buy and appreciate it
• Reduced my debt: paid down mortgage, student loans & credit cards
• Felt almost constantly busy & most often exhausted!

In 2011...

I am going to let myself off the hook. I am going to resolve to not create a laundry list of resolutions. Instead of always thinking that I 'should' be doing more I'm going to work on being content and happy as I am.

Wedding Tips for the Newly Engaged

It's wedding Wednesday, so I have this tip for you. Make your engagement session your own! I was inspired to write this when I saw "The Love Tees." Seriously, how cute is it that this couple made these love t-shirts for their photos? So, when it comes to engagement photos, don't worry about following any certain set of rules! Take risks, bring up any crazy ideas, you can do the formal 'safe' photos that your mom will like later. ;)

We did Abby & Chris's photos outside, in the winter, in Syracuse. Not an ideal time/place for photos -- but they turned out to be unique and so much fun!

With Bret & Anna I tried some unusual angles to add variety to their shots.

So don't be afraid to lay in the grass like Mike & Colleen...

go sight-seeing like Lindsey & Ryan...

Or, like one of my favorite unusual shoots, just go singing in the rain!

And if you want to try your luck at the carnival like Jessica & Thomas...

Paarsi Tomato - Poached Eggs

Ingredients;
- Olive Oil, a few tablespoons
- 1 large Onion (I keep some in my freezer so I always have it)
- 2 or 3 Garlic Cloves (I used minced garlic in the jar)
- 1/2 teaspoon Coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon Garam Marsala
- 1/2 teaspoon Mild Curry Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cardamon
- 2 1/4 cups of Chopped Tomatoes (I like the ones in the carton better than canned)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 4 eggs
- 1/4 cup fresh chopped coriander (aka parsley)

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet, and cook chopped onions and garlic on medium until they are translucent. Add Indian spices, salt & pepper until they are all mixed in.

Add tomatoes, reduce to medium low, and wait for the mixture to thicken slightly. Once you can create little wells for the eggs in your tomato mixture you're ready for the next step. Make four wells in the mixture.

Crack one egg into each. If you can, don't break the yolks! Cook until your eggs whites are no longer runny. You can make the eggs over easy, medium, or over hard deepening on your taste by letting them continue to cook. Sprinkle with fresh chopped coriander and serve with your favorite bread or toast.

GIVE WATER! Today I'm Thankful for the Things I Take for Granted

Today I'm thankful for the things that I often take for granted. What do I mean by this? Reliable electricity, the roof over my head, available (yet perhaps still working on affordable) health care, & running water. (Click on the top right of my blog to donate clean water now!) None of these things were commonplace in Bolpur India. I traveled there with Operation Smile. My part on the team was to take before and after cleft lip/pallet surgery photographs.

American kids (as I consider myself to have been 4 years ago when I traveled to India) think that they "get" it and understand that they're privileged. After visiting India I realized that I didn't have a clue. Did you know that in parts of rural India cow waste is gathered and pressed (by hand) to dry on walls to use as cooking fuel?

This dried fuel is burned on small cooking fires like this one.

To make chai many local people boil water in this way. Where does that water come from? It it often gathered at public pumping stations and carried, sometimes extremely long distances, to the homes. I was invited as a guest into strangers' homes for chai prepared on fires like these. Although they purchased bottled water for me knowing that the local water would likely make an American like me sick. When I was there I gave away my backpack, some flip flops, clothing, and granola bars...but I was given such a more important gift in return. True kindness and generosity without expectation and the profound meaning of gratitude and the ability to truly feel it.

So today I urge you to give thanks by not taking what you have for granted. From your comfortable home all that you have to do is click the give water button on the top right corner of my blog to donate a day's worth of clean water. Wedding Tip #36 - Registering Part 2

A while ago I wrote Wedding Tip #20: What to Know Before You Register.

I thought that I was so smart when I said: "Make sure you register for enough items! You will break a few plates and wine glasses. We all do. So, if you're hoping to have a set of 10, get 12 just in case."

To this tip I need to add:

- Wine glasses are fragile! You need to be very careful when you wash them and you will need extras....several extras.

- Save a printed copy of your registry. Three years later (now for me) when you want to replace the broken glasses because you've run out of spares you'll know exactly what style to get. Crate & Barrel has many wine glasses. And, guess what, many different styles look similar online!

What? Three years later I still have a copy of my wedding registry? Um...yeah. I can't believe that I'm admitting that I have such OCD tenancies. The truth is that I had an entire wedding binder. Everything that had to do with wedding planning lived in that giant 3 ring binder. After the wedding, it was like a scrapbook to me. I couldn't bear to part with it. So I saved it. Luckily, now it still contains our registry to tell me that our wine glasses are the "Elite" collection from Crate & Barrel. (Photo above) Technically they're Chardonnay glasses, but they are so nice, full, and large that they work well for most red & white wines. This time I am going to buy 4 extras and hope that Anthony & I become less clumsy as we get older.

I'm also buying some of these stemless wine glasses. Now, when we have a glass of wine with dinner we can just throw the glasses in the dishwasher. Have I told you how much I LOVE my dishwasher?

I'd brag about the other things that we've managed not to break...but I don't want to jinx myself! Speaking of Crate & Barrel, they are currently having a 25% off wine & dine sale. So, if you need anything, or know someone who is registered there, now would be a good time to shop!

Veggies at the Common Ground Fair

While wandering around the Common Ground Fair I met mid-coast Mainers Bill and Lauren. They had the prettiest veggies, and they were nice enough to let me hang out for a while with my camera. They call what they create "Edible Landscape Design" -- don't you just love that concept? I do! Looking back at these shots makes me want to plant veggies in our tiny condo garden! Is it May yet?

And now, on to the beautiful (if I do say so myself) veggie photos. Ahem, yes the Common Ground Fair was 6 weeks ago...better late than never?

Wedding Tip #35 - Sensible Shoes!

On your wedding day, just like any other very special event, you'll want to have the perfect shoes. So, go ahead and pick out whatever shoes that your little heart desires for your wedding ceremony. Just make sure that you're able to make it down the aisle and stand for photos! As we all know, adorable shoes are not always comfortable shoes! So, if this is the case for you...have a back-up plan! At my wedding I had a big basket of flip-flops in the ladies room (an idea I stole from my cousin-in-law Cay). My bridesmaids loved this, but so did other high-heeled-shoe-loving guests!

For your own shoes, you may want special shoes, not just one out of the basket. May I suggest these crystal Havaianas from Rue la la?

Or, you may also want to look into a platform wedge white flip flop if you've having your dress hemmed to your height+ a few inches from a high heeled shoe. Wedding Tip #34 - 3 is a good number...of years!

It seems appropriate that wedding tip number 33, about being married 3 years. How is this a wedding tip? Well, the tip part comes first and it's not long winded.

Remember that you are planning a marriage and life together not just a wedding day!

After the music stops, all of the flowers wilt, and the cake is eaten, all you have is each other. (And your photos...of course!) I'm lucky to be married to a man who is hilarious. Well, at least to me. Everyday he makes me laugh, and the follows up with "that joke was just for you -- don't facebook it!" Yeah, he knows me well. Well enough to anticipate what I'll do. Well enough to tell his friends "you're on your own bro" if they make a sexist joke around me. Neither one of us is perfect, but we're pretty good together. We're opposites, but it works. Being married isn't easy. I don't believe couples who say they never fight. Disagreement can be healthy, you keep each other from doing stupid stuff. However, at the end of the day, you take some of the things that the other one does that you find totally ridiculous, and you let it go. Why? Because in every marriage you have to make choices: do you want to be right...or do you want to be happy? Lucky for me, Anthony really enjoys being happy. ;) Happy Anniversary honey! I love you.

On Running a 1/2 marathon

I'm not a runner. I never have been. In typical Katie fashion I skipped over 5k and 10k races and went straight to a 1/2 marathon. Go big or go home, right? But...I'd trained all summer. I was running consistent 10 minutes miles. I was cross training with yoga. I was ready! Then a week and a half before the race I got a killer sinus infection. Race day, 10.10.10, was the first day I stared to feel normal again. I hadn't been able to exercise for the week and a half prior to race day. It was a colder morning than any I'd run - 42 degrees! My muscles felt sort of tight, but I felt pretty good. I was excited - but also nervous. I turned to my friend & training buddy Inga as we were waiting to start running and said "this is your fault!" It was her idea to do this race thing anyway! But you know what? The first 5 miles were fantastic. I was feeling good despite the last week. I was running well, and we could tell by the time displays that we were running about 10 minute miles. I wasn't trying to break any records; I just wanted to finish before the course closed at 2:30. I was on pace to finish in 2:10. I wanted to be sure to get my t-shirt and medal, and just finish. That was my only goal. As Inga and I passed the turn around point, in the fenway area, I was so excited and thinking that I could really do it!

Everything changed around mile 8. All of the sudden I felt a shooting pain in the side of my knee. I have bad knees and I was running with a knee brace because I had felt soreness before. This, however, wasn't soreness. As soon as it happened I knew something was wrong. Inga ran on and I lagged behind. Runners started passing me from behind. As I approached mile ten my knee was throbbing. Every step was painful. I felt tears welling up in my eyes. The tears were not from the pain (it was bad but tolerable) but because I was afraid that if I had to walk the last 4 miles that I wouldn't finish in 2:30. Then I might not be an official finisher...and I might not get my medal. I started looking at the spectators. A women in blue looked me in the eyes as I climbed a hill. She kept smiling at me and cheering, telling me I could do it. Lady in blue, whoever you are, THANK YOU! I wanted to stop; you kept me going.

Miles 10-12 were awful. I walked some, but even walking I felt the sharp pain. I jogged, and felt like the pain wasn't much worse than walking. I just felt like I was going so slow. All I could think was why was my stupid knee giving out? I wasn't winded! I had the stamina to finish, I just needed this joint to hang in there! I tightened the brace as much as I could. I kept jogging. I kept seeing the time displays and realizing that I was going slower and slower. I cried a little. I berated myself for crying. I said to myself, "YOU HAVE TO FINISH! This isn't fun, clearly you're not built to be a runner, but you've come this far and you are GOING TO FINISH! Just finish, get your medal, and then YOU NEVER HAVE TO DO THIS AGAIN." As I crossed into mile 13 I was telling myself I could do it and tuning out the pain. I was behind a team of women all wearing pink and encouraging each other. I fed off their energy. Then I could hear the music at the finish line. I crossed into the park. One mile to go. 2:18:30. I needed to finish by 2:30:00!

The last mile wound through the Franklin Park Zoo. It was the longest miles of my life! Every step felt like slow motion, every time my foot struck the trail pain shot through my knee. But I was almost there. The time I saw when I finished was 2:32. I know it sounds crazy, but I was so disappointed. Even though the announcer was still there and there was still a crowd I was so very afraid that they'd be strict with the 2:30 cut off and I wouldn't be an official race finisher. Then I saw the medals. As a guy handed me one he said "Smile! You're done!" I felt overwhelmed. I couldn't find my husband. I could find my friend Inga. I couldn't walk without a serious limp.

Fast forward 10 days. I had seriously sore muscles for 3 days. My knee still hurts a lot up stairs, down hills, and if I go for any kind of a walk on pavement. But it's getting better. The best thing that happened was when I received the race results. It was then that I realized that I acutally finished at 2:29:33! Wait, that's under 2:30:00! I DID IT! 27 seconds to spare! On race day I wasn't thinking about how since I didn't cross the start line with the first racers that the clock was ahead of my actual time. It took my part of the crowd a few minutes to get to the start! I also saw confirmation that I did the first 5 miles in 50 minutes, and that felt really good too.

I look back on the experience with mixed feelings. I had high expectations. I expected to feel awesome when I was done. Since I hurt myself mid-race I didn't feel awesome. I just felt...so...done! I don't know that I'll ever do a 1/2 marathon again. I do know that I won't be attempting a full marathon any time soon. I could be convinced to run my first 10k. We'll see what happens with my knee. The positive side of struggling through the race is that I feel like I overcame and even bigger obstacle. Not only did I run 13 miles, but I ran the last 4 through the pain of my knee. I did it. It feels empowering; and - if nothing else - I can now cross 'run a 1/2 marathon' off my bucket list!

Thank you to my husband, Anthony, Inga my training buddy, and all of my wonderfully supportive friends! I flooded Facebook with my running updates and you all kept supporting me. You're the best. I'm a lucky girl. I always admired and respected anyone who runs marathons; but now I have an even deeper reverence for them. You people are amazing.

What? Cupcakes with no calories? Too good to be true? Ok, these cute little treats from 1-800-FLOWERS aren't for eating, but they sure do bring a bit of birthday fun. FUN FACT: Did you know that today, 10/5, is America's most common Birthday? Apparently 'tis the season of Birthdays! Last weekend was my mom's birthday. I had planned on going to visit her, and then I got taken down by a nasty sinus infection. (That's another story, but I'm feeling mostly better now.) Since I didn't get to drive up to see her in person I was extra glad that I had decided to send her one of these cupcakes! I saw it and couldn't help but thinking about how when my sister & I were little my mom used to tell us that carnations were her favorite flowers. She said she liked them because they last such a long time. Maybe she just said that because they were the kind of flowers for sale at our school on mothers' day? It's funny, my mom usually has expensive taste, but I know she loves these simple flowers. Every time I see cute little carnations I think of her. I was so glad that I was able to send her this carnation cupcake! What's the best part? When the cupcake in bloom arrives it actually looks like the website photo (as you can tell from the iphone photo my parents sent me).

Hopefully soon I'll get to see my mom in person so I can give her the rest of her birthday gift. Hint, it's a foodie gift that I'll be blogging -- but later so I don't give away the surprise!

What I love most about it is that it's got the fun & unique look of a short dress, but it's long and elegant in the back! And, at less than $500 you can't beat this price! "There is no food in our house" quiche

The other night Anthony and I got home from work to find nothing for dinner. I usually keep something homemade frozen in the freezer for a quick & easy meal...but we'd exhausted the supply. I saw eggs, cheese, and not much else! What to do? Quiche!

Corn Flake Crumb Crust:
From EllensKitchen.com

• 1 1/3 cups corn flake crumbs (buy as crumbs or crush 3 cups corn flakes)
• 1/4 cup melted margarine
• 2 tablespoons sugar

Mix together thoroughly. Press into 9 inch plate. May use as is or bake at 375*F for 5 to 7 minutes. Will hold up slightly better and has crisper taste when pre-baked.

Easy Broccoli Quiche:
ADAPTED From AllRecipes.com

2 tablespoons butter
1 onion, minced
1 teaspoon minced garlic
2 cups chopped fresh broccoli
1/2 package of Trader Joe's Swiss Beer fondue
4 eggs, well beaten
1 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) Over medium-low heat melt butter in a large saucepan. Add onions, garlic and broccoli. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are soft. Spoon vegetables into crust saving about 4 tablespoons for a side 4" ramekin. Melt fondue in pan or microwave safe bowl and pour over veggies. Combine eggs and milk. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in melted butter. Pour egg mixture over vegetables and cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until center has set.

Note, this crust was very soft and almost more like a corn bread than a traditional crust...but I really liked it with the cheesy eggs!

One of my new favorite things is grilled pizza, so I can't wait to try this recipe.

Afraid of grilled Pizza? Don't be. It's actually much easier than you'd think!

Start with your favorite pre-made Pizza crust or make your own. I like the Pillsbury recipe but I double the amount of yeast (for fluffier bread-like crust) and use 1/2 white flour and 1/2 wheat flour.

Shape Crust.

Gather toppings & place in small bowls so they are quick & easy to add to your pizza.

Brush olive oil on the grill.

Toss on your formed dough.

Let it cook until it is lightly browned and easy to flip. Then, turn over and put on your favorite toppings! Here's what I used:

Left: Garlic Bread Spread, Olive Oil, Sharp Cheddar, Red Onion, Fresh Basil

Right: Roasted Garlic Onion Jam, Tomato, Goat cheese, Arugula

I finished Jen & Mike's album. Yay! She was one of the most excited (just happy not nervous) brides I've ever photographed. The anticipation was contagious and I really enjoyed myself at their beautiful wedding. They were also lucky enough to have one of the only rain-free days in the middle of a rainy month for their wedding day. Even though they don't mind the rain, (see proof of that in their engagement session photos) I'm so glad the sun decided to come out...we got some really great shots!

Anthony & I were lucky enough to be invited to stay with our friend Lauren on Cape Cod in Falmouth, MA. We had all the ingredients for a great weekend: friends, fun, & really good food! You know you're a food lover when you take more photos of your eats than anything else!

I had plenty of happy-toe-time at the beach (below) but luckily Lauren's Dad was out there Quahogging and he's a man that likes to share!

When I wasn't beaching it I ran a new personal best of 6 miles. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon...but I really run so I can eat more food! Like this Pasta with Quahog sauce.

More of this meal entailed:

Sauteed Vegetables

Grilled Swordfish (with soy sauce, garlic, olive oil & fresh parsley. Gas grilled outdoors on foil.)

Anthony & I brought this Cavit Pinot Noir, a lighter red wine, as a hostess gift. (We also gave them some Stonewall Kitchen Pancake Mix, Jams & Syrups) We usually prefer a heavy red like a big cabernet - but this is great for summer & it doesn't break the bank.

And...how did we spend our Saturday evening? Listening to live music at Liam Maguire's. We were happy find that Danny Quinn was so entertaining. He sang a mix of old Irish songs and bar sing-along-songs like 'Piano Man' and 'American Pie.' I was drinking Wachusett Blueberry beer- a delicious summertime favorite of mine.

I finished editing Ben & Kate's maternity session. This was such great photo shooting! Kate has a beautiful pregnant body; and she was willing to try all sorts of different things to get great shots. She even went for a bit of a swim in her bikini! Hey, I went in too! Luckily Ben was equipped with his iphone to capture the moment.

It also didn't hurt that Ben is a videographer and is easily excited about lighting...as am I. Here's a slideshow of most of the images. We even managed to get a few with their (not small) dog Schnitzel! I'm in on some fun, I know the top secret baby name but I had to hide those photos from blog. (for now) I'll post them after his birthday because we did some cool shots with his name. I can't wait to meet their baby. With parents like these, he's sure to be a cool little dude.

Wedding Tip #32 - Planning a bridal shower

I was asked:

"I am helping to throw a bridal shower for a friend, but she lives in
CA and the shower is at her mother's in PA. She would rather people
ship presents instead of bringing them, as she won't be able to take
them on the plane. Is there a nice way to say that on invitations?
Also, can you think of any creative ideas for a theme or something
that may go along with that?"

For most wedding showers, the main activity it gift opening. Therefore, I think some people might be put-off by the idea that they should ship gifts to the bride's home rather than be able to watch her open them. Although showers are a parties where gifts are certainly expected, it's usually considered rude to request specific types of gifts. Some couples do throw "money" showers, but I personally find these tacky. (I bet I'm not alone on this) I can see two ways to tailor the gifts to the bride's needs.

1) Have a themed shower
• Lingerie - just be sure bride & her mom aren't shy
• Honeymoon - attire & gift certificates (honeyfund.com) for activities/meals
• Foodie - register for small kitchen items, gorumet foods, & list the brides's favorite restaurants for gift cards
• Movie buffs - register for DVDs (@ Target or Amazon) & ask for movie theater gift passes.

2) Adjust the registries that you show on the invitation so that they only include certain, more portable, items. Don't forget, they can always add to the registry after the shower for wedding gifts.
Ideas: silverware, kitchen utensils, games, DVDs, kitchen/bath towels (larger but could be used as packing material), photo frames, placemats/napkins, coffee/tea, gourmet foods (you know I like Stonewall Kitchen), small card/board games (I love bananagrams), digital camera, video camera, digital frame, scrapbook, sheets or duvet cover (wait on matching comforter or duvet for the wedding).

If you can't find a registry to fit your needs, try 'Wish List' or 'My Registry'

However, even if you do both of these things, someone may have pre-planned or pre-purchased a gift and you can't really expect them to change. I think you should prepare your friend for the possibility that she may need to ship some items back to her home. Perhaps the bridal party could gift a pre-paid shipping label & supplies just in case!

In light of my full time photo job, I've decided to shoot fewer weddings and more family, baby & maternity sessions. Don't get me wrong, I love weddings, but that type of work is a full time job all on it's own! If you love my wedding tips not to worry- I plan to keep posting those!

Right now I'm editing a great maternity session from this weekend with Kate & Ben. I can't wait to share the photos! I'm totally in awe of the beauty of Kate's pregnant body. Amazing. They're almost ready, but to tide you over here are some of my new family/baby photos. Enjoy!

What makes a photographer a professional?

This is becoming an increasingly difficult question to answer as professional level cameras are making their way into the consumer market. Professional training and vision are surely important to being a professional. The biggest difference to me can be seen in the lighting. An amateur photographer can get lucky and take a good shot with “found” light. What makes a photographer a professional is to be able to deliver spot-on photos that suit the clients needs. At a wedding almost everyone has a camera… but few know how to choose between available light and flash (or mix the two) to get a great shot. A non-pro wouldn’t think to backlight the shot and underexpose (at least according to the in-camera meter) to get an amazing silhouette of the couple. Or to bring the rings and bouquet and position them in perfect window light to shoot … in the soft light right next to the bright harsh beam coming in the window. With commercial photography the demands are even greater. I need to know how to get just enough focus to highlight the product and blur the background. I need to be able to adjust each of my lighting sources and know when and how to add a pop of hard sparkling light vs when to add a soft glow. I can’t just make a pretty photo; I need to know how to fine-tune it to meet with the vision of my art director. I need to be a problem solver to fit a shot that lends itself to a horizontal photograph into a vertical advertisement. Artists too need to be able to know their craft so as to portray their message. A beautiful photograph on it's own isn't art, there should be deliberate intentions behind the work! Only if one knows the medium (in this case photography) extremely well can use one use it as a vehicle for their message.

A professional photographer needs to know all the little tricks of the industry…like helping the bride pre-scuff her shoes so she doesn’t slip and fall - or that gravy master and water looks just like coffee. I think the hardest part of all, is that professional photographers need to remember to value all of these skills and not under bid the job to compete with the amateurs! I’m not saying I’ve never taken a cheap job or given away my work…I’ve done it too. However, the industry is in an odd place with so many photographers trying to make it as pros! I think the best that professionals can do is to educate clients on the value of working with a pro photographers, charge what they’re worth, and to continue to make quality photographs.

Wedding Tip #31 - Favors

What should you spend on favors? People are all over the place on this. If you find a good deal you can spend as little as $1 each... But some people spend up to $4/5 each.

Or you could spend $3.50 on a mini jam! (Less if you buy it by the case) Ok, shameless work plug over... but I wanted to include my cute photo! It IS cute, right? It was fun to set a wedding table at work! More details here.

I digress... anyway, I feel like favors can be tough. Because, really, who needs another tiny picture frame, bottle stopper, etc? Why spend your money on something that your guests won't keep and use? So, unless you can find a trinket that you think your guests will love as much as you do - I recommend food. Everyone likes treats!

For our wedding Anthony & I bought little bride & groom boxes at the dollar store (10 for $1) and filled them with individually wrapped chocolate cream candies from Haven’s. (Jenny was a bridesmaid so having her make cookies seemed like it would be a bit much!)

I’ve also seen people put out cards that say in lieu of favors a donation has been made to __ charity. If you have a favorite charity this is a great option! You can't go wrong with a donation... everyone will be able to appreciate your gift!

What happens when an art nerd shoots a wedding...

Nelly & Jim made one of the cutest couples! They're very unique and it showed through all of the choices they made for their wedding... down to the peacock feathers! They were one of those great couples who let me take a ton of great shots - just the two of them. And, as I came up the stairs I said to my assistant Lynn, (also an art nerd) "Do you see that mirror? It looks like..." She jumps in with " that Van Eyck painting?" Same thought. Now there's a great assistant! Lucky for me Nelly & Jim were happy to play along. What do you think of my art-inspired shot?

Why you should switch to organic milk

Growth hormones and antibiotics in milk don't sound like a good idea. However, most people think - organic milk? I can't afford that!

I am well aware that organic milk is more expensive, however, it's totally worth it! Why? Let's say that all you are looking for is a milk that lasts longer in the fridge. Choose organic! Don't believe me? Check the dates on the grocery store and you'll see... organic milk has later expiration dates than other milks.

I used to pour a lot of milk down the drain because I didn't use it in time. So, organic is more expensive per ounce - but a better deal for me! Oh yeah, and now I'm not drinking hormones & antibiotics... a win-win! It does have a slightly sweeter taste than other milk because it is heated to a higher temperature in the preservation process than regular milk. I do have a sweet tooth, but this extra sweetness is very minor and you'll easily get used to it.

What an expert opinion? Let Scientific America tell you exactly why organic lasts longer.

Chicken with Orange Veggies

Why all orange veggies? Because I love Syracuse... and they played (and beat) Georgetown tonight. Go Orange!

Ok, on to the food. I've been thinking about writing a foodie post for a while. I'm perhaps quite different from many food bloggers; I'm a photographer first and a cook second. I'm the type of cook who usually just tosses in a little of this and that until I get it right. So, writing down a recipe might be a touch difficult but why not give it a try.

Chicken with Orange Veggies - a one pan meal
Makes a full dinner for 2 with plenty of leftover chicken for soup or sandwiches!

Ingredients:
1 small chicken
2 sweet potatoes
4 medium carrots
Poultry Seasoning Mix
Olive Oil (for drizzling over the top) about 4 tablespoons
Salt
Pepper

- Buy fresh or defrost Chicken in fridge (defrosting will take a day or two).

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

- Rinse chicken and don't forget to take out the package inside (contains heart, liver, & kidneys). Pat chicken dry with paper towels and place in the center of a 9"x13" roasting pan. If you use a larger pan than mine you can just fill it with more veggies... but not yet! Drizzle chicken with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning mix (to taste).

- Place the chicken in the oven.

- Chop sweet potatoes and carrots into 1/4" - 1/2" slices. Put in a mixing bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Mix to coat evenly and season with salt and pepper.

- After chicken is about half way through cooking take it out of the oven. (I baked mine at 350 with convection turned on for 1.5 hours) Place veggies around the chicken in the roasting pan. Return to the oven. You'll want to cook it until a meat thermometer reads 180 degrees and the chicken juices run clear. Looks like this ↓

THAT is love...

Today is Valentine's Day. My husband and I have been married for 841 days. It is funny to be able to count the days (Facebook's weddingbook counts for me) but it also doesn't seem like an accurate count! We started dating when we were 19, and sophomores at Syracuse (2001) ... you do the math. It's been a while!

Last night, as I was photographing Bret & Anna's wedding, the couple who was married the longest was asked to give the new couple some advice. First, the husband smiled & nodded to his wife allowing her to be the advice giver. (smart man!) She recited a poem by her own mother from their wedding day. I wish I could remember the wording - but it mentioned a successful marriage needing both patience and stamina!

I remember thinking that this was truer than Bret & Anna might even yet know -- even though you could see that they are very much in love! Marriage isn't a sprint. You won't win the race with just a big start ... or fancy wedding. You need to put in the effort everyday; it's more like a marathon. There will be small setbacks, there will be times when you think to you yourself - what in the world am I --- are WE --- doing? However, through overcoming all of the challenges (like anything really worth attaining) you come to find the greatest reward.

This morning I was awake before Anthony. I left the bedroom to blog so he'd be able to sleep in. That is love.

My writing of this post was interrupted by my cell phone alarm. I had it set for yesterday morning so I'd be on the time for Bret & Anna's wedding. Too bad I left it on - in the the bedroom - and it woke Anthony up. He forgave me... that is love.

My email told me that some single game Red Sox tickets were on sale this morning. I got Anthony standing room for a Sox-Yankee's game. That is love.

Anthony came out of the bedroom and declared that he was going to vacuum before taking a shower. THAT IS LOVE!

I give a lot of wedding planning advice on my blog - what I don't do is give much relationship advice. Sure, having a wonderful wedding day is nice, but that's not really what is important. What is really important is the foundation of your love that comes before - and the lifetime of love that comes after. If there is one bit of advice you get from my blog today I hope it is this:

It is all of the small ways that you say I love you that matter!

Wedding Tip #30 - Sending a "Save the Date"

Abby & Chris have some sports themed elements that they plan to add to their wedding. So, what better save-the-date than an event ticket? With a photograph from their engagement session, by me, and designed by Emily, these have to be the most unique save the date's I've ever seen. (They even have a perforated line so you could tear off the ticket stub) These are so cool that someone stole the ticket from my booth at a recent wedding show! They must have thought it was such a good idea they had to take it to remember!

Anthony & I didn't use a photo for our save the date cards. Ha, I know, the photographer didn't use a photo! I have to say - I think photo save the dates are super cute, and now I wish I had used one! However, having just started grad school at the time I remember feeling overwhelmed at the time and just wanted to get something mailed out to our guests.

I used vista print to make basic cards and then ran them through my own printer so I could add more info. (Vista print is cheap but I learned their color can be VERY off. They did reprint them for me but it took more time) All I had them pint on the cards was "Save the Date • Anthony & Katie • October, 27, 2007 • Portland, ME"

That's really all you NEED to put. Names, date, & location. Although, I would add "formal invitation to follow" just so no one is confused and thinks that it is the invitation. If you want people to start booking rooms you should add hotel info as well. I recommend reserving more than one block of rooms. We had 3 room blocks at different hotels to cover different price ranges. You should also create a wedding website & put the website address on your save the date. (I like the free wedding sites from The Knot & Wedding Wire) This way guests can always visit your site & you can add new info. Even if you don't do a save the date, I recommend creating a wedding website and emailing it to friends who will be invited to the wedding. This way at least they'll have the date & location so you'll be in their social calendar!

Jim & Dee had a designer friend Alex add this little heart with their wedding date to my photo from their engagement sesssion. I think this is a fun way to add text to the photo. (Note - text over photos has to be done really well or it can ruin the photo. Use a graphic designer!) Their save the date came printed as a postcard in a wedding color coordinated envelope.

Eating is a political act

Before I start I'd like to say that I am not a food expert or a politician. I'm a food photographer who recently watched Food Inc ... and I have a sister who is a hippie and bit of a food activist. I like food & I enjoy eating. I, like many people/women/eaters, spend a good deal of time thinking about what I eat and how it will affect my body.

It is no deep secret that natural less processed foods tend to be healthier for our bodies. What IS less widely known is that we're presented processed unhealthy food partially because it's what we buy, but also because of food subsidies, policies, and big corporations. You don't have to be a political scientist to begin to understand the problem, and I have no interest in fully deconstructing it. (I dropped my dual major in political science to a minor mostly because I find politics depressing.) What I can take away from both my 'International Political Economy' class (even sounds depressing right?) and Food Inc is that we are more powerful than we know as consumers. If we buy it - they will produce it. If we demand other products we can affect change! The Story of Stonyfield Farms in Food Inc. is very inspiring and Gary (CEO aka CE-Yo) talks about this very idea.

New Years Resolutions... how are you doing?

I have the day off today because I am doing a bridal show this evening. Come see me at Spinelli's Peabody @ 6PM. This may be my last show. I get so much word of mouth work that I don't really need to advertise anymore! Plus, I'm now focusing on smaller weddings & portrait work. It is a much better compliment to my 9-5 food photographing. So far it's been a good day off. I've done yogalaties, had tea & breakfast, put up new curtains, and now I'm on to blogging! (plan for later: work on client photo albums, haircut & bridal show)

So, New Year's Resolutions. I made a couple:

1) Lead a healthier lifestyle including exercising & eating well
2) Be more conscious of the environment
3) Not blog only for Stonewall Kitchen & remember mine too!

Hey... 2 out of 3 ain't bad! Plus, being healthier is really 2 fold! ;) So, while I talk about what I've done for the first two I'll take care of #3. Sweet.

• Healthier part A - Eating better: I've made a ton of homemade soups to bring to work for lunch. Just ask my co-workers... if they see me with pea soup for lunch again... HA! I've also been on and off looking up nutrition info for the things I eat. There are plenty of websites & ipod/phone apps for this too. (I like "Lose It! - a free app")
Counting calories is exhausting and quite frankly depressing. I know that alone wouldn't work for me to be healthier! However, being able to check out and compare the food you eat is very helpful! There are often many healthier substitutes!

• Healthier part B - Exercise: YOGA. PILATES. Enough said? I joined a gym in November and started taking classes. (tried to get in ahead of the new years rush) I've learned that I hate aerobics and feel stupid doing it. Strength training is OK, but I LOVE yogalates (yoga & pilates). Zumba is ok too... so is running on the elliptical - and I know I need cardio too. But, if you're looking to just feel great in your own skin try a class or video that is a yoga & pilates mix. It puts me in a good mood for my whole day. I bought this Golden Earth kit at tjmaxx (you can also order online) and it's a good 45 min stretch.

• Environmentally friendly. My husband already calls me captain planet. And while I am no where near the hippie my sister is, I try to do my part. I'll write a whole post about this later - but some new things I've added for the new year are to take cloth napkins to work and to keep veggie scraps in a bag in the freezer to turn into vegetable stock. (Skins, peels - it's all good in stock!)

• Blogging: Well, I blog at least once a work for work, but I haven't been to mine nearly as often. Now that I'm only part time in the wedding industry an entirely wedding tip themed blog doesn't make sense - but, tips will still pop up. I'm still not sure what the blog will morph into - but I'm looking forward to the journey!

* I very rarely receive free products and then blog about them. When I do, I will specifically tell you in my post that it was a free item. I blog about things I like - not things I get for free.

Wedding Tip #29 - Gather everything you want photographed

This was a tip born from my NOT photographing a wedding! (haha) My friends Colleen and Mike just got married and Colleen wanted me to be able to enjoy myself and not have to work. It's funny, I haven't been a regular wedding guest in quite some time! It seems I'm always shooting or being a bridesmaid. It was amazing to be there to help the girls get ready but not have to worry about my own hair, flowers, and shoes looking perfect. I had a lot of fun just playing with my point and shoot camera and trying to help gather photo things for Lara (Colleen's wedding photographer).

So, this tip is:
Gather items you want photographed and bring them to the room where you're getting ready!

All brides see examples of photos they love: cute shoes, sparkly rings, colorful flowers, & showcased invitations. However, many people don't think about how these photos are made! The best time for your photographer to get these shots is for while you're getting ready. You want your photographer to be there to get the hair & make-up prep shots, but there is a lot of downtime for a photographer at this point too. Make the most of your photography time by having all of the items you want cute shots of ready to be arranged and photographed.

Things that should be available:
1) Rings (both his & hers)
2) Any other special jewelry you'll be wearing
3) If you have something borrowed, blue, old, new, & a penny for your shoe have those nearby too!
4) Garter
5) Shoes
6) Veil or flowers/clip for hair
7) For him: cuff links & watch
8) Invitation & program
9) Flowers (have the florist deliver to you)
10) Dress hanging near a window or in a pretty open area

And, be sure to have all of the bridesmaids, groomsmen, moms, dads, and grandparents who you'd like to be in these photo nearby too! Having the people who love you around while you're getting ready is one of the best parts of the day!

Why have I been MIA? I've started blogging for Stonewall Kitchen (SK). I haven't acutally stopped blogging - I've just stopped writing MY blog. This is not a bad thing. I've very much enjoyed blogging for SK. I've realized that the reason I could so easily blog about weddings was because my job was wedding centered. I still photograph some weddings - but my job has become more food centered.

Here's the new blog idea. It will still be about photography (that hasn't changed) but I will add food into the blogging mix. Since I will still be photographing some weddings I will still answer wedding questions and offer tips. I'll just be writing about whatever is happening with me at the time. I plan to start talking about food and healthy eating too! Plus, I think I can help more people with healthy eating tips than I can with wedding advice! I'm ready for my new blog adventure... I hope you enjoy!

Dorothea Lange & Georgia O'Keeffe

I received this book: Dorothea Lange, A Life Beyond Limits (by Linda Gordon) from the author's publicist.

I have to say it felt like Christmas to get this nice big book in the mail before it was available to everyone else! This new biography of Dorothea Lange is a must have for any photographer or art lover's library. For me, learning about the amazing woman behind the camera makes her photographs even better.

"Perhaps the biggest surprise about Lange’s personal life was that she was by no means the saintly, self-effacing personality that many had assumed, extrapolating from her photography. On the contrary, she was driven by ambition, sometimes irritable, often demanding—yet uncommonly sensitive and generous."

Lange, a photographer I have always admired, is brought to life through the pages of this book. As photographers we often attempt to reveal much about our subjects while shielding ourselves. I enjoyed this look at the woman behind the camera.

Ok, I'll be the first to admit that lifetime movies are usually all man-hating and not so good, but I really liked this one... even if they were a bit hard on poor Stieglitz. Last I checked it was still on comcast's free on demand so take a look! I knew that O'Keeffe was Stieglitz's muse but seeing, though these actors, out how he thrust her into the spotlight was revealing. I particularly liked the mention that his photographic work was fading out of the public eye and she worked hard after his death to establish his legacy... what an interesting relationship.

Side note, what is with the heavily airbrushed photo of Joan Allen (O'Keeffe)? She almost looks like a child in the artwork but we only see her as an adult in the movie - what is the deal?

I was recently talking to a friend who wants to get into wedding photography. Then I thought, hey, people helped me when I was just starting so why not pay it forward... here goes!

Getting Started:

- Purchase photographer uniform - black dress/suit! :) My super girl photo belt with Velcro-in accessories is also a must have!

- Pro equipment: You'll need pro cameras & lenses! The glass makes a big difference! As well as similar quality back-up equipment. (If you don't own it rent it)

- Education: Just like nurses need to be trained, there are skills & tricks of the trade that you should learn that you cannot pick up on your own. You may not be saving lives - but to your clients their wedding photos are a matter of life & death so don't take your responsibility lightly! Take classes & workshops.

- Assist, assist, assist. First work as a wedding photographer's assistant. Then work as a 2nd shooter. This is a great way to build confidence, skills, & your portfolio.

- Research. What are photographer's charging? Yes this will vary a lot and it will be based on experience, style, overhead... a lot of different things. You need to add up your own costs.

- Join a professional organization, PPA, ASMP, or even Pictage/Collages and go to meetings & read forums.

- Shoot a discounted rate wedding but NOT FREE. Don't devalue yourself, but explain to your clients that you are offering them a lower rate because you have experience as a 2nd shooter but this will be your first solo wedding. There are plenty of couples out there with little budget but your job is to educate them that your price is directly related your your experience. Do this to watch your own back! You don't want them telling their friends what they paid you and being stuck with that low rate. This way if they refer friends you can up your price based on the experience you've gained since.

- Practice at a friend's wedding. Only IF they're ok with it and you're not in the pro's way. A good time would be during getting ready photos before the pro gets there, cocktail hour, or dancing shots! Do as I say not as I do... if you are IN the wedding you can't shoot it. (I put the camera away to walk down the aisle)

- Know when to say NO. Some clients want more than is reasonable. If they are difficult in the beginning - chances are they won't get any easier to work with! If you get a bad vibe run the other way. You need to have a good relationship with your clients to give them the beautiful wedding memories they deserve.

- Attend wedding shows. This way you can see how photographer present themselves. This will help you when marketing yourself!

- Create a website & sample album. You can't get work if you don't have any photos to show! Don't cut corners. If you show a cheap album you're telling potential clients that you don't care about your work enough to give it a good home.

- Have fun. This is a job, but one when you're present on one of the biggest days in the couple's lives. You need to be happy to be there! If it ever stops being fun don't do it!

Rain, Rain, go away?

We had already rescheduled once because of weather so we decided to just go for it in the rain. As it turns out, rain can make for some pretty sweet shots! :)

3) nice looking plain black umbrella
4) extra golf umbrella (for photographer)

Big Weekend!

Two weekends ago I did double duty shooting Kiele & Jay's engagement photos and Nicole & Andy's "Ever After Session." Kiele even helped me come up with the fabulous name "Ever After Session." I was suprised when she was a bit nervous at first, but her sweet and super romantic fiance was awesome at helping her to relax and have a good time. As I told them - this is a big part of why an engagement session is a good idea! Most people aren't used to being photographed, so it's better if the first big session is a practice run like an engagement shoot instead of wedding day. They're doing pretty well for a practice run aren't they?

Andy & Nicole, on the other hand, are old pros! They've been married just over a month and this was their "Ever After Session." First, you may be asking what is that? Well, the "Ever After Session" is a post-wedding shoot that allows you to get all dressed up again. Also, having one allows you the chance to have a second set of couple photos in a totally different location than your wedding. Or, should it do the forbidden 4 letter R word (ahem, rain) on your wedding day - then you get to wait it out for perfect weather for your 'Ever After Session." And yes, I was of course thinking of Cinderella and prince charming living happily ever after when I named this session. Kiele thought that 'ever after' was better than 'happily ever after' - more sophisticated. I agree. :) So, Andy and Nicole got a chance to have even more fun with this shoot - as did I.

Wedding Tip #28 - Sun & photos

My friend Kiele, after reading at least one too many bridal magazines, sent me the following email:

Hi Katie,
I was reading in a wedding magazine that if you expect to take pictures in complete sunlight ( that is, IF it’s a completely sunny day), like having a beach wedding with no shade around- that the pictures can be harsh and I should set up a spot where there is also shade. In your experience, do you think this is true?

I responded:

Kiele,
Yes, super sunny at noon is not the ideal for photos. The best light is 1/2 hours after sunrise and 1/2 hours before sunset on a sunny day. If it’s cloudy then the timing doesn’t matter as much because there is no harsh light. Can you make pictures when it’s bright and sunny out? Sure – but in that case photographing in the shade is best. I don’t think it is necessary to shade an entire beach ceremony.

Below, Andy & Nicole's wedding did take place around noon on a bright sunny day (ceremony in full sun) and the photos turned out beautifully! (if I do say so myself)

Kristin & Chris and Lindsey & Ryan were shot near sunset on a sunny day. However, Bret & Anna’s photos were taken right around noon on a sunny day and we made the shade work. :)

So, I think, don’t worry too much – It will be fine. And you can’t control the weather anyway :)

Wedding Tip #27 - What does a wedding really cost?

All photos are from Biz & Andy's wedding that I photographed with my dear friend Brooke. Please note that I did not check with the bride on her budget so these photos do not necessarily reflect the budget amounts I am suggesting in this post.

My clients understand that you get what you pay for, and they want to be sure they have great photos! I don't think it's a big secret that if you go cheap on something you're get a cheaper product. So... why this post? To encourage you to prioritize your wedding must-haves! Put at the top of the list what's the most important to you, and further down what you're willing to skimp on.

Many people ask me what a typical wedding budget is, so here's the breakdown. We'll assume you're spending $30k to make it easy to do the #'s (and since that is the average wedding cost)

Reception 40% ($12,000) - Includes room rental, food & beverage (sometimes includes other extras like dessert/cake)

Honeymoon 14% ($4,200)

Photography/Videography 10% ($3,000) This doesn't mean $1500 on each - it means with a $30 budget you many only be able to afford photography. Great videographers, often calling themselves wedding film makers, are a wonderful way to document your day too. If you have an over $30k wedding budget and can afford to I suggest you add videography in addition to photography!

Misc 9% ($2,700) - site fees, attendant gifts, favors & transportation

Rings 8% ($2400) - Just the wedding rings. Expect to send more if you're buying the engagement ring too. Even for just the Bride & Groom's wedding bands I think this estimate is a bit low.

Bridal Apparel 7% ($2,100) - Include dress, veil, shoes, accessories & hair/make-up ... and don't forget your very own bridal beer koozie ;)

Music 5% ($1500)

Flowers 5% ($1500)

Invitations 2% ($600)

Cake 2% ($600)

Here's my list... or at least part of it. (In priority order) If funds were unlimited would I have had the best of everything? Of course! However, since I did have to stay with-in an average budget I had to make compromises.

Photography/Videography: Of course this was my top priority, I'm a photographer! I was also lucky enough to know a lot of wonderful people and had several friends shoot my wedding. I know I'm biased, but I would argue that this should be everyone's top priority. Why? After the food is eaten, the flowers have wilted, the music stopped ect - photos are what you'll have left! I spent $139 x 5 ($695) hotel rooms for 4 photographers & videographer. Plus $500 in thank you gift cards. Total $1195. However, my friends shot as a gift to me and I also did all the photo editing & album design myself. (Photographers may charge by the hours of shooting but this fee includes all of our editing time!) This put me under the budget % in this category. My photog's sites: Paul, Brooke, Zev, Jeff, and videographer Ben.

Reception: What was important to me? Good food & open bar. What wasn't? The exact venue. So, we didn't choose a prestigious reception hall. We picked a good local place with great food! Room rental $500, Food aprox $5k, bar tab aprox $5k. (Tables & linens included - chair covers, decor & cake extra) Putting me under the budget % in this category. We wanted a city wedding with close-by hotel so guests could drink & no have to drive. We picked Mariner's Church (Part of Old Port Tavern - Portland, ME) About you get what you pay for... this is a great location at a seemingly low price. However it was very much DIY - unlike some halls that have a very involved coordinator you had to do a lot for yourself here.

Rings: My mother worked for a jewelry store. Even with her help were way over the budget % in this category. That is also why it's near the top of my list. http://www.dcolejewelers.com/

The Dress & Bridal Attire: I found a good deal. Dress $1000, Alterations $200, Wrap $200, Veil $150, Shoes $40. Hair & make-up I did for-trade with an amazing stylist. However I did pay her to make-up for travel, hire assistant stylists, and we tipped well. Dress & veil: Patricia Buck (no frills location but great deals), Shoes: Precious memories.

Invitations: These do set the tone for your wedding, I did DIY on vista print for save the dates (they were cheap but had inconsistent color). We went to a stationary store, papier gourmet, for wedding invites for more quality control! I spent approximately $600 + postage.

Honeymoon: travelocity.com (now I"m singing their little jingle) We were able to score a week at an all inclusive 5 diamond resort (all 5 star restaurant, all drinks, room service, & no tipping) in Playa del Carmen for $4k including airfaire & Cancun to playa airport transfer.

Flowers: My mom knows a wonderful florist, Marcia Davis. She's awesome, in fact, my centerpieces are the middle photo on her website.

DJ & Lighting: Eric Kruger, mid-range price with exceptional service! ($1000) He even helped with lighting and dealt with our very long request list happily.

Hair & Make-up: Grace Professional Cosmetics, love her! :) We've also worked on other portfolio projects together and I can guarantee that she and her team of stylists are the very best! I did some portfolio work for her so we had a partially paid and partially 'for-trade' arrangement.

The Venue: We wanted to get married in a catholic church but exactly where didn't matter. I just wanted a church with good light (I like photos) and one that was a bit more low key. Yes, even in a Catholic church they let us write our own vows! We were married at St Barts in Cape Elizabeth, ME. $300 first offering (church rental fee), then you pay musicians & the pastor too.

Transportation: Trolley from Mainly Tours. $600 for up to 4 hours, including gratuity.

Wedding Coordinator: Added her last minute, but a day-of coordinator is a must! Even if this is just a friend or family member who makes sure your plans are carried out you need this person! I spent $800. My coordinator was not terrible, but not fantastic either so I'm not going to recommend her or list her info.

Cake: We went for a bargain on this one, but it looked good & tasted good so who cares? And who eats cake when they're too busy partying & drinkin' ;) We used French's Cakes, but they're tiny & don't have a website. (How budget? Less than $2/slice) I told you that you'd have to pick some places to go with a budget option - this was ours.

Favors: I found cute little dress & tux boxes 10/$1 at the dollar store. I saw these online for $0.70+ each! Look around! We got little chocolates to put inside because who really wants another tiny little trinket? Chocolates were about 60 cents for each box.

(Keep in mind there were 2007 prices and for many items I worked with friends in the business & traded favors +$ ... so some prices aren't listed)

So, why else am I posting this? I want to help you know what a wedding costs and how to prioritize. Personally, I'm so busy I'm raising my prices. I'm actually not charging more I'm just only offering more coverage options. I'm now changing from a 4 to 5 hour minimum and only offering high end albums! By taking out minimal offerings I can do my job better by not letting clients cut corners to cut costs. A low cost option I will be offering is bridal portrait sittings. These will be after the wedding and give you a chance to dress up again and have a fashion shoot! These will not be exclusive to my wedding clients - anyone can book a session. Wedding Tip #26 Bridesmaid & Groomsmen Duties

So now you're a bridesmaid or a groomsman... what's your job? Just keep in mind your #1 priority is helping the bride and groom and you'll be fine. Think of the best man and the maid/matron of honor as team captains. They're in charge of all the events and should delegate duties to the rest of the bridal party so they can help.

Bridesmaids:
• Be supportive but honest. Tell her what you think; but only when she asks for your opinion! And... if she doesn't seem to like what you have to say - drop it! You can do it your way for your wedding.
• Purchase your dress & have alterations. Make sure you do this all on time so she doesn't have to bug you!
• If the groom is unavailable for tastings, registering or even to make the seating chart - be ready to step in and help your girl out!
• Don't complain about the dress, shoes or other bridesmaids (even if they are annoying)!
• Go to a dress fitting to learn how to bustle the bride's gown.
• Throw/attend bridal shower (the party may be thrown by family)
• Throw/attend bachelorette party
• Remind the bride to eat/drink enough water on her wedding day
• Hold the Bride's bouquet and fix her train during the ceremony
• If she throws her bouquet try and catch it - no one wants to see it hit the floor!

Groomsmen:
• Get fitted for & rent tux (Don't forget black socks)
• If the groom leaves for his honeymoon right away return his tux for him
• Throw/attend bachelor party
• Usher in guests
• Escort bridesmaids from the ceremony site and into the reception party
• Dance with bridesmaids, single guests, and even grandmothers!
• Have a good time, if you're dancing & enjoying yourself by bringing the fun more guests will follow your lead!

Full Bridal party:
• Show up, stand up, look good! (aka guys don't forget to shave and ladies give yourself a mani/pedi)
• Decorate the get-away car with "just married" and/or cans
• Throw an engagement party - if their family doesn't or as a "friends" party
• Attend the rehearsal and be cooperative and attentive!
• Put out fires! If anything doesn't go according to plan on wedding day do your best to fix it so the bride and groom have a fabulous time!
• Hold the rings
• Two bridal party members need to be the official witnesses and sign the marriage license (usually best man & maid of honor)

Give a toast! One of your most important jobs as the Best man and maid/matron of honor is giving a speech. Here are some tips for making a great best man or maid of honor speech!

• Add little bits about how you met the bride or groom and your relationship with them. However, it should not be all about that. Focus on what a cute couple they are, how they're prefect together, and stories about them as they first met until now.
• Give advice. This can be serious or silly, and it is especially good to give if you're married. You've heard it all before... "never go to bed angry," "It's all about compromise," "take care of each other"...

Don't:
• Don't embarrass them. Remember, GRANDMA is there! (if you must say something risky say it at the bachelor/bachelorette parties or rehearsal dinner)
• Don't make it a novel. Keep it short and sweet so you don't lose anyone.
• Don't speak "off the cuff" unless you've very good and experienced at this type of speech giving! Make notecards
• Don't use too many inside jokes
• Don't make it all about you & the bride/groom. It's about THEM... as a couple! Not that you've know them since 1st grade and the childhood games you used to play...

Lines I've heard & liked:
• Tell him to cover her hand with his. Then tell him that's the last time he'll ever have the upper hand.
• Tell them that you hope that this is the day they are the least happy together, because then they'll only have happier and happier future days together.
• You knew they were really in love when he did x for her (like skipped watching a big game, drove hours just to see her...)

A tribute to Frances Benjamin Johnston. She was one of the first women to make photography a career in the late 1800's and early 1900's, when it was still very much a man's business...as all business was.

"Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) born in Grafton Virginia but was a resident of Washington DC for most of her long life. Johnston was an early photo-journalist and a noted freelance photographer; she was one of the first American women to achieve prominence as a photographer. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, she studied photography upon her return to Washington, D.C., in the mid-1880 and opened a professional studio circa 1890. Her family's social position gave Miss Johnston access to the First Family and leading Washington political figures and launched her career as a photojournalist and portrait photographer. One of her scoops as a correspondent for the Bain News Service was to board Admiral Dewey's flagship with a letter of introduction from Theodore Roosevelt and interview the "Hero of Manila Bay" en route from the Philippines. Johnston's documentary work was exemplary and included a renowned series of photographs commissioned by Booker T. Washington for the Hampton Institute in 1899 and the Tuskegee Institute in 1906. While she specialized in the photos of the powerful and elite she also on occasion did scenes of workers and working class life about 1905 she did a remarkable series of photographs depicting mechanics and laborers at work at the Naval Gun Factory.

Today the Library of Congress is the principal repository of the writings and photographs of Frances Benjamin Johnston. She was one of the first contributors to the Library's Pictorial Archives of Early American Architecture and executed a systematic survey of southern architecture with the support of the Carnegie Corporation." Considering her bold career choice it strikes me as vastly appropriate that she chose to create portraits of herself dressed as a man.

Frances Johnston inspires me and reminds me of a quote I once read "Well-behaved women rarely make history." -Laurel Thatcher Ulrich From Johnston's business choice and her provocative self-portraits you can tell that she must have been quite and outlandish woman for her time! While I am very much a girly-girl, I admire and respect the women who came before me who gave me a CHOICE in this. I am fortunate to be able to choose the career of photographer, or any career at all for that matter, and not be a societal misfit. Thank you Frances Benjamin Johnston!

Where did the sudden interest in Frances Johnston come from? I just started an amazing book, A Flickering Light, by Jane Kirkpatrick. It is historical novel about Jessie Anne Gaebele, photographer and the author's grandmother.

About 60 pages into the book, Jessie is just starting her job as a photographer's assistant. Her boss tells her about the photograph above and I just HAD to find a copy to see! It's too bad a copy of the image wasn't included in the book. I can't wait to learn more about Jessie Anne and the other female photographers Jane Kirkpatrick writes about in her novel.

It was QUITE a learning experience! I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such great kids. However, I've also learned that I think digital photography & my teaching skills are better suited to older audiences, and a group of kids AND one age group at a time - this group was ages 5-17! In the future I think I'll teach, high school, college and/or adults so I can really get into advanced concepts of photography. Although I do have to brag ... ask any of these kids what an aperture is and they could tell you!

There are a few things I learned from my first in-hospital portrait sitting! The first few days are busy! Everyone wants to visit and that makes for very crowded small rooms! If possible I think it would be best to set aside a small amount of time with no visitors so that we could focus on getting awesome photos! Speaking of awesome photos - I did love doing an in-hospital session. The first few moments a family has together are so special - they should be captured! There is photo of my mom holding me as an infant, and I remember seeing the photo as an adult and being able to tell how much she loved me in the moment. Powerful stuff like that deserves to be photographed. That's why my favorite shots are of Jackie kissing baby Joey and the new little family together on the bed. :)

Wedding Tip #25 - Photography, copyright, and getting all the facts up front from those you hire!

Background... There was a post in Wedding book from a bride who wanted her photographer to give her high resolution digital negatives & he refused to give her anything but low resolution images with proof #'s on them. She also made some mention of the photographer "doing the wedding as a favor" but I don't have all the info on that. There were a lot of comments on the thread but I threw in my 2 cents. I'm posting it because I hope it will be helpful to others. The advice about putting all your expectation in a contract is important for ANY wedding vendor you hire. I said:

"First, I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles! For anyone reading this and thinking of booking a photographer - this is why you put exactly what you are paying and what you are getting in writing! By having a contract with everything spelled out you know what the expectations are and can protect yourself.

As for "doing the wedding as a favor," if this is true they should have told you exactly what the discount they gave you was - their bad! However, you should consider what their advertised rates are, or average photo costs in your area, and then what they charged you. If they charged you substantially less they may consider having done your wedding as a favor even if you paid them. (I have no idea - but I'm only trying to guess at the situation)

At this point I think your best bet would be to discuss what the added cost would be for high resolution photos. Most photographers are more than willing to sell you this (myself included) especially if you order prints/album from them. I would also explain to them that you'd like to share photos on Facebook. I always provide Facebook photos for clients and include a tasteful watermark with my name. It's a win win - you get to show off photos & your photographer gets recognized for their awesome work.

The reason you pay extra for a disc is because that's how photographers make a living. Their fees are often broken up into shooting fees & print fees. I could go on to explain the rising costs of cameras, computers, advertising, online image hosting... but the bottom line is every photographer's business plan is different but there are a lot of costs many people don't think of (estimates are the photogs only keep 30% of their earnings after costs). What seems so unfortunate to me is that it doesn't look like your photographer explained their policies to you beforehand. You should always know the added costs for photos BEFORE booking a photographer!

If you are unable to negotiate this situation on your own, you may want to consider bringing in an intermediary, such as the better business bureau. However - they do not always side with the client, you'll need to be able to prove what you're entitled to so it's always best to work it out with the business first one-on-one first.

Meg's Trash the dress session

I've been missing from my blog. I know, I know - terrible! The last two weeks I've been adjusting to my fantastic new job at Stonewall kitchen. I am now their staff photographer - and loving it! What do I do there? I shoot food and products for their catalogs, website, recipe cards... whatever they need!

GASP! What does this mean for my wedding business?
I love shooting weddings, but since my husband works 9-5 it will be much nicer to shoot fewer weddings, work a 9-5 myself, and see him more. I do still plan on keeping my wedding & portrait business - don't worry! There are only a few things that will change. One is my weekday availability - I will only be available after 6PM weekdays (like most of my clients). From now on I'll be taking fewer wedding & portrait jobs. The good news is that means I can be sure to work with people who are looking specifically for my style and seek out superior client relationships. I'll also be hiring a company to do my image processing (editing out the best raw files & adjusting them for the best color) and album design. I tested them out recently on a friend's wedding and I think it's going to work out well. In fact, they might even be better editors/designers than I am! It just shows you should stick to what you do well. I want to focus on shooting photos and outsource the rest!

The other change you may notice is that at first glance my prices seem to have increased. This is only partially true. I have raised my prices a little - most photographers go up a bit every year. However, I have also raised my minimum to 5 hours (up from 4) and done away with my inexpensive albums (coffee table books) and will now only be offering high end flush-mount books. Why? In coffee table book the color is not as good and they are not as durable. Both types of albums take me the same amount of time, yet there is less profit in the inexpensive albums. So, with many companies like blurb offering do-it-yourself coffee table books I know my clients can still make their own if they opt to purchase digital negatives. I hope this explanation of my business changes makes sense. If you have any questions just let me know. :)

Baby Bump shoot tips: Button down shirts are perfect for showing off the belly. If you're going to bring other clothing too - the more form-fitting the better. After all, you are doing it to show off your belly! If daddy can, you should have him join you. If he does, be sure he brings coordinating colors so that you can match in photos. Also, props are awesome. We used baby socks, ribbons, a red sox hat, teddy bear & flowers... bring along whatever is important to you & baby!

Bret & Anna's Engagement Shoot

Since it will be cold out on their wedding day - it was great to take advantage of the Wentworth's beautiful grounds for their engagement shoot. For your engagement shoot planning - the first photo was taken at 12:15 and the last at 1:09. It took us almost exactly an hour; which is what I suggest each couple sets aside for portraits. This way we have time to wonder around to a bunch of great locations, and try some fun things! Note to self... put sunblock in my camera bag!

I can't tell you how many times, as a wedding photographer, I have been left as the only person to instruct the couple how to cut their cake! Lucky for them, I'm an expert. However, there is a simple way to best cut a cake that could be learned BEFORE your wedding day, so I made a little Illustration to show you how. I have had the busiest two weeks! I have a baby shoot, bump shoot, wedding shoot, engagement shoot & food shoot to edit! (This is just after finishing & posting another wedding's photos yesterday) Also, Sunday I had a booth at the Hyatt Regency Boston wedding show. It was actually a great show, and I met a lot of wonderful couples! I was lucky to have had two friends, Dee & Inga, come along to help. After the show, Inga came back with me for wine & sushi on the porch. As we drove from Boston to Salem dark clouds descended but that didn't stop us. It might have rained, but after, when a rainbow appeared, the photographer in me couldn't help but run for a camera!

Wedding Tip #23 - What to bring to meet your florist

So you're getting ready to meet your florist. What should you bring with you?

• Types of flowers that you like and will want to include
• Color samples (fabric from your dress, bridesmaids dresses, or table linens would be perfect)
• Theme samples (invites, photos, and objects like favors that you want to include)
• Candles? Sample/sketch of what you'd like to use and where if they are mixed with flowers
• Budget - have an idea of what you plan to spent on flowers. This is usually 3-8% of your total budget.

IDEAS! Go magazine crazy! (Or try google image search) Tear out bouquets and arrangements you like! Make notes on if you like this entire bouquet or just the flowers/colors used. Also - take a look at your florist's website or sample books and let her know what arrangements are your style.

NUMBERS. Where and how many floral items do you need? Here is a checklist guide:

______ Bridal bouquet
______ Groom's boutonnier
______ groomsman boutonnieres
______ dad/other boutonnieres (other could include readers, god parents etc)
______ bridesmaid bouquets
______ mom/other bouquets/corsages (other could include readers, god parents etc)
______ flower girl basket & ring bearer boutonnier
______ flowers for grandparents
______ Pew/aisle decorations
______ flower petals for aisle
______ alter/huppah/ceremony arrangements (alter decorations are usually left in the church)
______ flower garlands
______ wreaths
______ cocktail table & bar decorations (low vases)
______ table centerpieces (Tall? short? mix?)
______ head table(s) centerpiece(s)
______ cake table (you can use your bridesmaids bouquet OR petals for this too)
______ restroom decorations
______ extra toss bouquet?

You will also want to think about details such as when the flowers should be delivered, and what should be sent where. For example bride/bridesmaid flowers should be sent to where the ladies are getting ready. Corsages/boutonnieres usually go to the church. When you have your timeline together you will want to get a copy to your florist. You want your flowers on time - but not too early so they stay looking fresh!

Wedding Tip #22 - Great Photos take TIME

Last weekend I shot a wedding where I was given enough time to get all the shots I wanted. YAY! Sometimes, to achieve this, photographers shoot portraits the day after the wedding. However, then you need to get your hair and make-up done again. So... what are the other options? You could do portraits before the wedding, but some couples don't want to see each other until the bride walks down the aisle. (Kaleen and Matt felt this way) So... what did we do? We shot during their cocktail hour. To accomplish this we needed to take slightly more than an hour - and we needed to be very efficient with group portraits. The portraits at this weeding took about an hour and 15 minutes. We did the group shots first (about 25 mins) and then just Kaleen and Matt (about 45 mins) - this time includes all walking/location changes. My stopwatch started at the first attempt to gather people and went until they walked down the stairs - ready to be introduced.

The "Wedding Portrait"

This is a classic, must-have shot. Even if it's not your style you should have one looking-at-the-camera traditional portrait. Do it for Mom, do it for Grandma... but do it! With the 2nd photo shown we added a twist! While I don't think cocktails should be in every photo, I love this toasting shot. And so did they... they finally got to have some of those drinks they'd been handed!

The "Walking Away"

This photo is a great way to end the album. (Yes, a good photographer has to think of everything, including the final album, on wedding day) Most weddings have a last dance, but it doesn't look any different than the first dance. (Except maybe more of her hair has come loose) Sometimes there is a "get away" with a special car, sparklers, or other fun event. But, most of the time, there are just a lot of hugs and goodbyes. So, what goes last in the album? This shot!

The "Drama Kiss"

(two above) Stairways = drama. Enough said. Ok, Black & White tends to also up the drama factor!

(directly above) This is my favorite shot! And, it's usually the one most couples give me the weirdest look when I ask them to do it! He worries he might drop her. She says it's a weird angle for her back... but isn't it worth it! Usually I say if it feels uncomfortable don't do it because you'll look weird. This is the exception to the rule. I think every couple needs a shot like this! Then again, I'm an incredibility girly hopeless romantic.

The "Portrait Kiss"

Did I mention I like kissing photos? The portrait kiss is always nice. Also, for those out there who are a little camera shy - I think this is actually a little easier. You get to look at each other. You get to kiss. I can shoot with a long lens and give you a little space! And, it's a nice break from that smile that's getting frozen on your face. I always ask my couples to kiss again, and again, and again...

The "Environment"

Ok, let's talk about taking advantage of your venue. Are there cool spots in your chosen location? Take photos there! Be sure to set aside time to shoot there too, in additional to outdoors! Also, in case of the dreaded 4 letter "R" word (ahem, rain) it's a good idea to have some indoor spots you love for your photos.

Who's a big photo nerd? This girl!

My friends Kaleen and Matt got married yesterday. I photographed Kaleen getting ready, but had my friend Simi come along to do the 2nd shooting for the ceremony and then tag in for the reception so I could party. It was one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever been too - Kaleen and Matt were too cute for words and they chose the most amazing location!

When I got to Kaleen's dad's house she told me that she hadn't really slept much, and gotten up at 4am too excited for her big day to sleep. Ok, here's the part that makes me a big photo nerd. Even though I was out at the after party until 1am ... I was awake at 7am. I couldn't fall back asleep. Why? Because I was too excited to look at the photos! I had that "these photos are going to be awesome" feeling and I couldn't wait to pop them up on my laptop and take a look.

This has got to be the most common question I get asked by friends & family. What I said to Jon is what I say all the time. It's both about the quality of the camera AND the skill of the photographer. So if you're looking to take better pictures you should both upgrade your equipment and take a photo class. If you're just looking for a nice camera, a good rule of thumb is to go with something with a name you know! Nikon, Cannon, Olympus... all good stuff! Go into the store and try it out! How does it feel in your hands? Do you like how big it is, do you like where the buttons are? Is it intuitive or will you need to spend hours reading the manual?

New Art Exhibit Faces Facebook

Matt Held

Matt Held couldn’t give his oil paintings away except to people who might use the stretchers for firewood. Then came a virtual art bazaar named Facebook.

In November he started a Facebook group. It’s called, “I’ll have my Facebook portrait painted by Matt Held.”

Now he has 3,300 virtual friends, his paintings are selling, plus 150 people electronically clamoring for his Facebook’s “status update.”

“I mean,” he said, with contented irony, “is it a form of a stalking?”

Held’s story, along with his art and that of a dozen colleagues who use the emerging social networking technologies to make and to disseminate their work, is on display in Status Update, a fascinating new exhibition curated by Debbie Hesse and Donna Ruff under the auspices of the Arts Council.

It is mounted, appropriately enough, at Haskins Laboratories. The scientific think tank at 300 George Street wants to know if the new technologies are an assist to literacy or are retarding it. The show is on view on the 9th floor, until Aug. 1.

Nothing’s retarding Matt Held. After he painted his wife’s portrait based on her Facebook representation, the response was so great, he’s had to limit himself to painting 200 portraits. Real ones, but based on Facebook offerings, which could be the real person, or not. His work is being seen, and around the world, he said, instantly, by his “friends” from Jerusalem to the Congo.

“All the gallery system,” he said, “including the receptionists who used to throw my slides in the trash, all that now is bypassed and bulldozed.”

In addition to “Steve,” the eponymous picture at the top, one of the lucky people whose portrait Held has painted is fellow New York-based artist An Xiao. Her work, “Nothing to Tweet Home About (Self Portrait in Postcards)” poses the question: What does a very old medium, like writing on a postcard, have in common with the newest, Twitter?

Xiao’s candid answer: “The easier the communication device, the more trivial the message being sent.”

Thus she is sending dozens of postcards to the Haskins Laboratories throughout the run of the show, and she is Twittering away about their status as well. Several postcards on display have these messages; “I’m so addicted to Subway sandwiches. My gosh!” and “Can’t tell you how sleepy I am.”

During a panel discussion about the status of “status updating,” and the other technologies, Xiao and Haskins Laboratories chief Phil Rubin both said that whereas in other gatherings people are asked to turn off their cell phones, the audience of some 50 were asked not only to keep theirs on but to Twitter away.

Xiao is a serious conceptual artist. She, like Cat Balco, another of the participants, who teaches painting at the University of Hartford, doesn’t have the answers. Xiao wants to find out if the aggregate of the postcards and the Twitters will add up to a genuine portrait of herself.

Balco’s old-fashioned oils on canvas, like this one titled “Skin,” were included in the show, according to Hesse, because her subject, a kind of metaphorical take on the neural networking patterns happening inside the brain, is a mirror of the social networking that has seized the art world in the last six months or so.

“I think,” she said, “we are hardwired to create and to connect.”

Yet she is also something of a critic of Internet-based art. “When I paint, I don’t know the result. I’m discovering, I’m learning. I genuinely feel that when I work with the paint, I’m coming up with structures, ideas that aid me in understanding myself and the world. The Net-based art can be just the execution or implementation of a pre-existing idea.”

It’s a faux social networking page where the ID image is the first 1,000 people who came up on a Google search.

Rachel Perry Welty (on the left with fellow Net artist Katie Ring) updated her Facebook status via her iPhone every 60 seconds for about 16 hours on March 11, 2009. That amounted to 550 updates along with a photo for each update.

“My aim,” she said, “was to give a completely comprehensive answer to the Facebook prompt, ‘What are you doing right now?”

She got hundreds of requests seeking her as a friend. “I don’t think what I was doing was very fascinating - her messages, like Xiao’s were fairly quotidian, or shall we say boring? — “but people appeared,” said Welty, “to be confirmed that they were like me.”

Welty’s previous work includes a video performance based on all the wrong numbers or messages she received over a four-year period. “I do this karaoke based on them,” she said, “lip-synching the messages and I found it difficult, but also poignant.”

Xiao, along with artist/panelist Sharon Butler of Eastern Connecticut State University, suggested that the best Twitterers were indeed people who saw the medium as an outlet for performance. “I mean when you stand in front of 300 people,” said Xiao, “how long can you tell them what you ate, that you’re sleepy, and so on?”

“Artists are innovators,” said Butler, “but as in all genres, some is good, some is not, but much of it is thought provoking. How much is resonant and will last for the ages? Who knows?”

This guy does. Len Zimmerman, neither artist nor professor but interested visitor and member of the public, said, “Look, I find this all interesting, but I don’t Facebook or Twitter. I just read the newspaper. I think there should be more real, human faces, like this, in person, not Facebook people but actual people facing and talking to each other.”

Other artists not mentioned above who are exhibiting include: Kevin Van Aelst (his T-shirt images are behind Butler above), Greg Garvey, Heather D. Freeman, Keith Johnson, and the curators themselves Hesse and Ruff.

Oh, where did the curators find the artists in the show? “I got them all,” said Hesse, “through Facebook.”

Wedding Tip #21 - Knowing and negotiating the "rules"

I know, you might be thinking...rules? What rules? Who would make rules for MY wedding! Unfortunately, in most cases you will be bound by the rules of the ceremony or reception site. It's best for you, and your photographer, to know them as soon as possible. This way you'll be able to ask for exceptions if necessary or plan alternatives. You'll also want to prepare your vendors who may need to alter their usual plans.

Common restrictions:

• No flash photography
Some officiants just won't budge! In this case I usually ask if I can shoot with flash for at least the processional and recessional. Then I will shoot with a tripod and no flash for the ceremony - but it's a good idea to have some post-ceremony time scheduled in the church so we can re-pose a few shots.

• No aisle runners or flower petals
Our church wouldn't let us have an aisle runner because it was an insurance liability. We couldn't use real flower petals as a runner because they might stain the carpet. Our answer? Ordering fake petals. You can find them (and the real ones) here: www.petalgarden.com

• No candles or sparklers
A fun outdoor photo opp can be to have guest hold sparklers. However, most parks and many estates won't allow this. Before ordering a huge supply check to see if it's OK. Also, many indoor locations won't let you use candles unless you you then in a glass container that is taller than the height of the flame. Looking for candles & votives? • Other Decoration limitations
Just ask your ceremony site where they do (and do not) permit you to add decorations. Also keep in mind that it is proper church etiquette to leave behind at least some of the floral arrangements for the parishioners to enjoy at Sunday mass.

• Throwing Rice/Birdseed
Rice is bad for the birds! They eat it and then it expands in their little tummies. So even if it's allowed I wouldn't recommend it! Some locations just don't like the mess created, in this case bubbles are a great alternative. I got mine here: www.orientaltrading.com

• Wedding Planners/ Coordinators
Many churches and reception sites have their own coordinators. In this case if you've hired a planner they will need to defer to the site planner. The best way to make this run smoothly is to have them in contact before the wedding.

• Restricted Areas
Many times photographers aren't allowed in the sanctuary/alter. I like to be unobtrusive so I never go that close. My favorite places to shoot from are kneeling down in the center aisle, from the back of the church or balcony, and from either side aisle. I do not walk in from of seated guests - instead I go around the back to get to the different aisle.

This weekend I had an outdoor wedding wedding where the Rabbi asked that I stay at the back of the chairs. I was not permitted to come down the aisles or sides! I thought this was a bit extreme, but it is most importantly what my bride & groom want. And they do not want me arguing with their Rabbi! Luckily I had a long lens and was able to shoot from my designated area. After the ceremony the Rabbi thanked for for being so respectful.

(Too bad my favorite angle would have been this!)

(What I ended up with was nice too - if I do say so myself. However, I would have liked to be given the freedom to capture both angles during the ceremony. The light from the front was beautiful!)

This is by no means a full list, if you have a question, ask! The saying that's "it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" isn't worth the risk on your wedding day!

WHY all the rules?

There are several reasons these rules exist. Some are just due to insurance liability. Other rules are because a past couple (or vendor) pushed too hard and caused a problem or damage. Most of the rules in a religious ceremony are in place to keep the focus on the couple and the religious sacrament rather than have guests distracted. I do have to say though, I feel that sometimes officiants take this too far. It's too bad that sometimes the focus is so much on the rules that the couple can't get what the really want. If a couple feels the same away about me not moving I'll do what they want - they're the boss! ;) My advice? Be sure you know all the rules before you choose locations and officiants!

UPDATE: After writing this post my friend Abby learned that the church she & Chris planned on using DIDN'T ALLOW PHOTOGRAPHY! "Photography is prohibited without express permission from the officiant." However, the church hasn't provided an officiant meeting yet! Here's the deal. Churches, Temples, and any location are well within their rights to make their own rules. However, I believe they should be up front about them, not tell the couple that can "do whatever they want" and then put things like no photos in the fine print. Read your contracts thoroughly!

The Landscape Photography Workshop

In the Landscape Photography Workshop attendees will be introduced to the basic of taking photographs of our surroundings, whether urban or rural. Through a series of technical and visual lectures and assignments photographers will develop a strong foundation and understanding of how to frame, the specific equipment needed.

This is a “foundation” level workshop. It will focus on teaching basic to advanced camera functions, composition, basic file editing. From Ansel Adams to Minor White and the B&W style to the colorist such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston students will be introduced to some of the masters of the landscape photography tradition.

Please note that this is a "shooting" workshop. Participants will be expected to take photographs every week to fulfill the weekly assignment. PhotoInstitute.net designed the workshop to accommodate shooting time during the week-end, time to edit and delivery of photographs created for a specific assignment by 10AM on the day of Critique.

Come join this outstanding workshop on Landscape Photography. It is opened to anyone with a minimum level of photography skills*. Meeting, Lectures and Critiques take place in our Virtual Classroom. The focus is on improving your Photographic skills and not to just listen to long lecture. Therefore participants will have to shoot on a weekly basis. Please be aware that planning and shooting may require a minimum of two hours (2) a week, however shooting may and should take place on a specific week-end.

Every participants in this Workshop will receive an 8"x10" coffee table book! That's right! This book will be produced from the various weekly assignments. A selection of images from each participants in the Landscape Photography Workshop will be included.

If a participant decide to not include his/her photographs in the Coffee Table Book, for this workshop he/she will still receive the book. Note: PhotoInstitute.net will independently select an Image for the cover and will place photographs in the order our designer feels is the most pleasing.

Wedding Tip #20 - What to know BEFORE you register

Registering for gifts is like an all expense paid shopping spree! You are given a scan gun with few quick clicks and a beeps and you've picked out your new living room. Yes, this is super fun! However, like all things wedding it can actually be a bit overwhelming too. There is too much cool stuff to just go into store without some preparation. If you register for too much you might looks greedy or not get the things you REALLY want. If you register for too little your guests may not have enough choices and feel frustrated. So, I decided to blog about registering and hopefully make it easy for you and your spouse-to-be!

1) Assess your assets. What do you and your fiance have? Did one of you just buy new bedroom furniture or sheets? If so, save that section of the store until last and really scrutinize before you scan! Figure out what you need most. Don't have any pots and pans... or are you using the ones your parents get for THEIR wedding? Get yourself straight to the kitchen department!

2) Shop online before you hit the stores. Many, MANY guests prefer online shopping for weddings. This way they can click and send it straight to you! So, before you go into the stores and scan away take a look at their websites. (Bed Bath and Beyond has a GREAT site with bride planning tools) Also, since you should only register at 2-4 places you'll want to choose different types of stores with different price points.

3) Alternative is in! This is not your parents wedding registry. Anthony and I had a target registry and registered for a wii, camping supplies, and a digital photo frame! Lucky for us it is not totally acceptable to register for toys! Honeymoon registries are also becoming increasingly popular. These types of registries are especially great if you're already living on your own and have many of the household things you need.

4) Avoid the traps! There are a million cool appliances, but do you really need a forman grill, panini maker, and a grill pan? Avoid registering for many items that do the same thing! Also, avoid the over priced items. Do you really need a $50 spatula? At specialty kitchen stores you will find lots of cool items, but unless you really love it, you might just want to get your own and save registry items for things you want but might not splurge on for yourselves.

5) Remember what your guests will have to spend. Some cash-strapped guests may only be able to afford a $25 gift while others will want to splurge and spend $200+ on your gift. So, be sure you have items on all of your registries at several price points. If you are having engagement parties and showers guests will be looking for several gifts. You can't have too many little items. Love those Asian-inspired soup spoons? Who cares that they're only $1.99 each, someone will buy you a set and the matching bowls! Some guests prefer buying a set of little gifts to one big-ticket present.

6) Colors, styles, patterns & trends. Sure the lime green bowl is awesome, so is the red platter. However, if you are going to use all of these items in your kitchen/dining room remember that they'll need to look good together...don't forget here today gone tomorrow! Trendy looks are fun for accent pieces but for the things you'll have for years to come you may want to consider classic timeless pieces. Simple white bone china will always be in style and you can add decorative chargers, bold salad plates and colorful linens to change the look.

7) Go home and edit! After your scanning spree head home and hit the 'net. Take another look at your registry. Take out the items that you are less in love with and double check that you don't already own similar items. While you want to give your guests enough choice you should also make sure the things you really want won't get lost in a sea of needless extras.

8) Quantity - make sure you register for enough items! You will break a few plates and wine glasses. We all do. So, if you're hoping to have a set for 10, get 12 just in case!

9) Entertaining & your style: Are you the dinner party type or the nachos & sports game type? If you love to host wine and cheese parties stock up on glassware and cocktail plates. If you prefer relaxing in front of the TV for the big game register for chip and dip sets and come cool beer mugs.

10) ... and lastly WHERE?

Wedding Tip #19 - When to ask Attendants

Natalie asks: "I haven't even got my wedding party together yet because Tim has yet to call his best man and decide on groomsmen. I suppose I can wait a little bit longer for him to make up his mind but I feel like a jerk waiting so long to ask people! All the magazines/websites say 6 months is sufficient, but how much time do you think I need?"

Natalie, this is a tough one! I can't say there's an exact time when it's best to ask bridesmaids. From my experience: I asked my bridesmaids to be in the wedding about a month after getting engaged, 9 months before my wedding. I have been in two weddings already, and am in a 3rd in 2010 and I have always been asked 1-3 months after the bride gets engaged. This doesn't mean that's the rule - I think some girls just can't wait to start planning and want their girlfriends in on the planning ASAP! I know I talked about my wedding non-stop as I was planning and friends who are a part of it are more ready to lend an ear!

You must be very restrained to not be chatting with the girls and say "your dresses" or some other slip - I would have been too excited to not blurt it out! I think you should tell Tim to get on calling his dudes! :) Ok, in all seriousness I would say, if possible, try and give attendants at least 9 months for planning. Between the shower & bacherlorette party it does take time to get everyone and everything organized. Plus summer schedules get tricky so you'll to give plenty of advance notice for their important dates.

Wedding Tip #18 - ME & MA coastal locations

Peaks Island is one of the Harbor Islands in Casco Bay. It is just a quick ferry or water taxi ride from Portland, ME to get there. Peaks is the closest island to Portland and a quick ferry ride!

Bar Harbor, ME. It's way up north... 4 hours from Boston but SO beautiful. You can't beat Maine in the summer. It's got to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Hmmmm... can't wait for summer!

1 hour 15 min from Boston just north of Portsmouth, NH. If you're looking for a location for an indoor reception with outdoor space for photos this is perfect! The park shown is just across the street and the lighthouse is s short drive. If the weather isn't perfect your guests are still comfortable indoors!

Private residences are a GREAT way to save some money because you can bring your own caterer and bartender. Wedding Tip #17 - when to buy white

To start thinking about black and white - here is a wedding inspiration board from Lexi & Mike's wedding with lots of black and white photos! Lexi and Mike got married at the Westin Hotel Waltham-Boston on New Year's Eve. They had a every elegant wedding and kept it fun with cute details! The party favors they had brought out just before midnight really helped get everyone into a festive new year's mood. Bringing out creative favors can really influence the mood of your day!

Ok, back to today's tip. WHEN SHOULD YOU BUY WHITE? Thinking you'd like to wear white to your shower, bachelorette party or rehearsal dinner? Don't forget that white is SEASONAL! That's right, if you have a fall wedding you might have a hard time if you wait to look for white clothing until the month of the event. Start shopping early! Or, if it's off season try outlets and online shopping. Also, keep in mind that white is not the only seasonal color! If you are using a signature color for your wedding and would like your rehearsal dress to match you should shop for it during the corresponding season. For example if your looking for white or pastel, think late winter as that's when spring clothes come out. Also, if your weight fluctuates buy your dress on the big side. A seamstress can almost always make is smaller for you, and it's not worth feeling uncomfortable in something too tight!

While we're talking about off-the-rack shopping - don't forget you can do this for bridesmaids dresses too! There isn't a rule that you must go the typical bridal shop route. A lot of stores are starting to offer bridal party options, and department store websites make browsing on the rack dresses just as easy as off the rack at bridal stores.

Knot Networking Event & New Vendor Friends

Last night Anthony & I attended the Knot's networking event at Fenway Park's EMC club. We stayed late enough that I got to take one of artistic blossoms' cool centerpieces home! (pictured above) It's important for me to attend events and seminars like this so I keep current with a the new wedding trends. Plus, why would I pass up open bar & appetizers @ Fenway? This was a great event for meeting new vendor friends. While it was a heavily attended event, here are a few folks I had a chance to chat with.

Ceremony & Reception Site: Chocksett Inn
Located in Sterling, MA (near Worcester) this is a charming location for both your ceremony and reception. I met Shauna, the wedding coordinator, and I'm sure she would be a big help to you in your planning!

Chair Covers: Sitting Pretty
Sarah, of Sitting pretty, was the winner for coolest business card - it's round! Check our their site for a beautiful assortment of custom chair covers, sashes, and lines.

Clergy/Councilor: Rev. Robin Zucker
Robin is a Unitarian reverend and she also provides pre-marital counseling. With offices on the Northshore in Hamilton and close to Boston in Somerville she is super convenient to meet with.

DJ: Curtis Knight
I've met Curtis and his partner Anna before! Curtis was the DJ for my friends Matt & Ashely so I know personally that he does a great job.
